Bruce Mulcahy Bio

Bruce Mulcahy was born in Dewsbury and became interested in painting at an early age. He gained an honours degree in Fine Art at University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1978 - receiving his first commission later that year - and he began painting full-time shortly afterwards.

Inspired by painters who have worked outdoors from the Impressionists onwards, all Bruce’s work is produced en plein air.

The practical difficulties of working outdoors in all seasons are put to one side as the important thing for him is to react directly to the landscape and the particular colours, textures and light of the moment.

Intensly passionate and driven to capture nature in all seasons, Bruce uses a range of mediums, including Oils, Gouache and Acrylic.

Bruce has exhibited in numerous galleries across the country, including:

The Mall Galleries, London

Manchester Academy of Fine Arts

House of Commons

Leeds City Art Gallery

His work was selected for the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition in 2001 and 2002.

Not only spending what time he has hiking across the local landscape finding the best places to paint, Bruce also finds time to teach.

He holds regular classes in Batley and Wakefield, and perfoms demonstrates both regionally and nationally.

His paintings are held in collections throughout the UK and in fourteen other countries to date, including New Zealand, USA, Canada and Japan.

Bruce is a member of several art societies including Dewsbury Arts Group, Huddersfield Arts Society, the Fylingdales Group of Artists.

In 2007 he was elected a full member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists.
